Miss Washington County 2017 Shivali Kadam

On Saturday, April 22, I was given the honor of becoming your new Miss Washington County. I feel truly blessed to have this opportunity to serve the community that raised me and helped me become the woman I am today. The Miss Washington County Scholarship Program’s motto is “more than a crown,” and I plan to realize this credo by making service and sisterhood the focuses of my year. I look forward to promoting my platform, Engineering as Empowerment, raising money for the Miss America national platform, Children’s Miracle Network, and growing this program so that we can welcome more young women into the sisterhood and provide them with the means to achieve their personal and academic goals. I am also excited to be competing for the title of Miss Oregon this summer in Seaside, OR. I would like to extend my sincerest gratitude to our sponsors and volunteers; I am so grateful to have you all with me on this journey and cannot wait to see where the year takes us!

About Me

Though I was born in Mumbai, India, I consider Tigard, OR my hometown. Over the years, I have grown from a Twality Titan to a Tualatin Timberwolr, To an Oregon State Beaver, majoring in Chemical Engineering. I have conducted research at Portland State University, where I studied the synthesis of boronic acid fluorophores, and completed an internship at CH2M through the MECOP program. I will be graduating at the end of this year and plan on earning a MBA in the future.

Platform: “Engineering as Empowerment”

My platform  focuses on two problems that prevent women from succeeding in engineering: stereotypes and a lack of role models. It is my hope that by working with the youth in our community through various mentorships programs, I can alleviate some of these stereotypes, inspire young women in consider engineering as a career path, and show that any woman can be an engineer.
